Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition Announces 2026 Scholarship Opportunity

The Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition (TCLC) is proud to announce the availability of two $500 scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

Scholarship Details & Eligibility

  • Two (2) one-time awards of $500 each will be granted to qualifying seniors.
  • Applicants must be graduating seniors who either reside in Tuscarawas County, attend a Tuscarawas County high school, or are part of a county-based homeschooling network.
  • Recipients may use the funds toward a certificate program, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree at any accredited post-secondary institution.

Scholarship Application Requirements
Applicants must submit the following:

  • A completed TCLC scholarship application. Please visit your school’s guidance counselor office or print the application on our website by clicking the button below. 
  • A typed 300–500-word essay addressing the question: “How have you or how would you improve literacy in your community?”
  • Two letters of recommendation: one from a teacher and one from another adult, such as a club or group advisor, another teacher, or school official.
  • Scholarship applications are due March 1, 2026, can be mailed to Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition, PO Box 1173, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 (must be postmarked by March 1, 2026), or emailed to TuscarawasLiteracy@gmail.com with the subject line “TCLC Scholarship Submission.”

Scholarship Selection & Award Notification
Scholarship winners will be selected using a rubric evaluating essay content, academic and extracurricular involvement, and community service. Winners are notified in mid-April. Scholarship checks are sent directly to the recipient’s chosen college or university upon confirmation of enrollment.

Scholarship Background
The TCLC scholarship was established in memory of Keith Rathbun, former board member, longtime literacy advocate, and respected leader in local journalism, the TCLC scholarship honors his legacy by empowering students to continue their educational journeys. Rathbun served as publisher of The Budget Newspaper in Sugarcreek and as president of the Ohio Newspaper Association, championing literacy and community engagement throughout his life.
